I have put over 43 hours into this game. As it stands right now I can not recommend it. There is a lot of good to this game. others have already talked about what is good about the game. So i'm not gonna put that here. what I am going to put is. Unless you know how to handle weight mechanics for a boat apparently your boat after 40+ hours will start flipping around like a cat on crack and catnip. I died so many times from my boat flipping around so crazy like that it's nearly Impossible to fix now meaning that's 43 hours is wasted. the last time I tried I was shot across the map and logged up against a homestead platform where I couldn't break my boat free. it became part of the structure.
The game doesn't tell you about weight distribution or how to do it. this is a mechanic that we don't normally see. and unless you work with all the things your going to be building and know how much they weight which they don't tell you let alone all the things you'll be building you'll just end up in this same situation. This has to be fixed before i can even suggest this game to anyone.
Edit: Found the culprit of my woe's it's called a Sabatier Reactor. while readjusting weight helps a lot this item litterally shot my boat into the air the moment it was crafted. Do not build this item on your boat if you are to play this game. if you need it at some point build it on a platform of the area you'll need it at. At this point never build it on your boat!!!!!

Very cool concept, very rough execution.
I played the demo and was hooked. I really enjoy the gameplay and the feeling of exploration and maintaining all of your systems. The attention to detail is spectacular. I was genuinely sad when the demo ended and couldnt wait for the early access release. However...
Unreal Engine 5 claims another victim with comically bad performance. R9 5950x + RTX 3080 should not be running at 30-50 fps on low at 1080p. I have tried multiple fixes suggested in the developers discord, with no luck.
With the $30+ price tag, this game is not ready for your money until these technical issues are addressed. And that's before talking about the generic feeling atmosphere, very unpolished combat, and other issues with the actual gameplay itself.
There's a diamond in the rough here, but it's going to take a lot of chiselling and polishing to demand a $35 price tag.
Edit: It's going to need a lot of polish on the optimization side of things. The core gameplay itself feels fairly solid as is, with a lot of attention to detail as I stated above. Some users can't read smh. All other games seem to run fine on my machine as well.

The game has been out for 36 hours and I have 16 hours of gameplay already which probably means I have too much free time on my hands. It also means that I'm having an insane amount of fun scrapping and powering up bases. I'm sure there's a story line here. I've heard pieces of it... but I'm more obsessed with wiring things at the moment.
This is the type of game I get lost in. It's zen. Clear out some weird creatures. Run some wires around like a mad man. Plop down some batteries and power generation stuff. Lights go on. Props get thrown in the wood chipper to get resources to activate the next base. Is that the point of the game? Probably not. Is it my point in playing the game? Definitely.
The game is a little rough here and there. It's crashed on me once, and there have been some FPS hitches and the like, which one expects from an early access game. But the core gameplay loop I'm involved in here is like crack for my brain. 9/10 would recommend. If a future update brings a sick fog horn to my boat, I will then see this as a 10/10 experience.

I do not recommend this game as of right now. It is unplayable. Incredible game, when they fix the issues I will come back and change my review to recommended. I have a 4080 super, 7900x3d, 9 fans not including gpu fans my computer runs ice cold.I get decent FPS around 80 I believe once you leave the starting area which I would assume is pretty bad on lower end PC's because all it's rendering is water and the occasional POI, BUT I get to the very first POI outside of the starting area and the game full locks up my PC and crashes every time, I have tried 3 times to progress past the starting point and it bricks every time I get near the POI. Literally unplayable at this moment. Other than that its literally the same content as the demo as it will just crash once you leave the area that you can play in the demo. I get its an early access which is fine, but when you can't even get anymore content than whats included in the demo, kinda silly. Will update when its playable.
Update: verified files, kinda of fixed it, after 3-4 hours or so of game play started crashing every time i got close to a POI again. Verifying files seems to temp fix it MAYBE, unsure. fix the crashing and ill change my review.

This is a type of game genere that i hope takes off. I haven't finished the game yet and I'm loving every second of it.
Even when running on a 5090 the game still chuggs and stutters and crashes a lot. And the horrible artifacting.

After 100+ hours in game.
The Good
- Its got a good start, easy to learn and understand. - A lot of bugs but they are working on it, which shows promise for the future. - Their discord server can be useful if you care about reporting bugs. - Cables tend to work themselves into the floor/walls randomly. - Don't worry about resources in game, there is far more than enough. - Angels are easy with bad AI. They will kill you fast if your not paying attention and give less than sharks. Also, they wont be aggressive towards you unless you attack them first so you can safely ignore them the entire game. - Lot of content advertised to come in the future. The Bad
- You run out of content very fast. - It has a lot of bugs - Farming sharks is extremely easy, standing on the edge of your ship and you are safe. They give a lot of mid tier and high tier resources, sometimes double the amounts. This is a game breaking experience to be honest. The Ugly
- Their Discord server has a lot of spam and I had to leave after a useless ping and the arguments about it that burried it. - A lot of higher role member give info but don't seem to actually have any information beyond the players. - Physics engine needs a lot of work. You may experience your ship sinking, being thrown beyond distance, or capsizing on its own. You may also get launched beyond view of your ship randomly. - Game crashes are frequent, so make sure you set autosave to 5 mins, not that it actually works all the time. Save manually every chance you get. Overall, It has potential but has a long way to go. Don't waste time in their discord unless you enjoy wasting your time. I would recommend you save your money and wait until summer of 2027 at the earliest before considering spending any money on this. If you're a content review channel, this will give you a few hours of content at most, if you stretch it out.5 votes funny

The last caretaker is a game about a robot well after the end of the world trying to restore humanity. It is a lonely, yet beautiful trek across a flooded world with only your ship and the long dead voices of those in the logs to accompany you. With each step of the journey, each shattered companion you find discarded on the ground, it can quickly start to feel like the journey is hopeless. That even if you succeed, it may amount to nothing.
And yet, I find that I cannot help but continue. I cannot help but want to restore this broken world. To ensure the success of humanity among the stars. And so I restore island after island, rid them of their infestations, fight tooth and nail, and fix everything I can find that needs fixing.
It is a deeply satisfying journey to undertake, and very few games have this sense of absolute scale, where you can arrive in a place, realize the incredible amount of work that must be done, and simply shrug and begin work on your megaproject. When you do get a place set up to peak efficiency, the feeling is amazing, and then you pack up and head to the next place to restore that as well.
Without spoiling too much on the specifics of your journey and the turns that it takes, there are moments of genuine tension, wonderful depth in the details, and surprise along the way. I do not in any way regret my journey with The Last Caretaker, and if you give it a chance, I very much doubt you will either. There's probably nothing else like it.

It's a very good game but it needs major optimization. When I first started playing the game, my graphics were set to ultra and I was playing at 120 fps, but as I explored more of the map, I had to keep lowering the graphics more and more until I set them to low, and even so, I can no longer play the game because after finishing the Lazarus mission, the game only reaches a maximum of 20 fps. It’s worth noting that I have a 4070 Super, which is not a bad graphics card. That’s the only reason I gave the game a bad review; other than that, everything is perfect. I plan to change the review when the game is optimized. But basically, right now, without optimization, the game isn’t worth it.

DO NOT BUY this piece of excrement. One day and the ~$50 cost of the game spent trying to get this game to run on my 1 year old Dell XPS laptop running WIndows 11. I've downloaded more drivers than an Formula 1 race and the thing still crashes on start up, More research done on the internet than I did during tertiary studies, tracking down every suggestion and the result is the same. Learn from anguish and torn garments and avoid this game!!

Quite poorly optimized, weird artifacts and some very rare cases of textures Flickering around, just shows how early it is.
Honestly I enjoy the mechanics, I enjoy being able to scrap pretty much everything, it speaks to my Loot Goblin Mode, I like the Ship and sailing around on it.
So why am I Not Recommending it?
Three things:
- The Price, for Early Access, this is a weird price for the amount of content it has. Creates expectations (Or lack thereof) as soon as that price tag comes up.
- Lacking Minimal expected QoL, an actually useful tutorial and tooltips for things.
- Absolutely stiff, not fun, no feedback from weapons whatsoever. Combining groups of small skittering enemies with the odd melee, incredibly useless starter Electric pistol and the erratic terrain climbing of enemies doesn't really make me wanna look forward for more combat.
As it is right now, It seems there weren't many changes done from the Demo. Though I like the game and wanna see it get better, there's too many things that just don't feel right.
Hoping things Improve honestly because I do wanna keep playing and see if it picks up later.

get to the first beacon, repair the three solar panels, add them to connector than to door to power it. Guess what ? Door wont open because their is no power ? Basically the three solar panels that are starring directly at the sun produce not a single watt of power. This game would be fun if it actually worked, but sadly it just doesnt.
Also, their is no help or guide in the game, so you have to learn everything on your own.. and I mean Everything like how to save and most importantly the power mechanic in the game.

88 hours in. The bugs are fine. The game is well done and a blast. I am putting the game down and walking away. I was fine on the ocean for a while, but it finally got to me. The devs need a motion sickness mode. You spend tons of time on the ocean. Tons of time in your boat managing things. I don't need a game in my life that causes seasickness. Realistic is one thing, getting nauseous is another...
Continued to play despite no motion sickness mode. Found out that outposts that you set up production at. Like the refinery. Do not operate while you are not there. I went back to the refinery expecting to fill up my boat with diesel. No the outposts are instanced and are only active while you are there. So yeah, limitless diesel but only if you sit and wait for the production to work. This is not a bug but bad game design.

In short:
- Interesting concept
- Familiar yet somewhat fresh gameplay loop
- Looks great
- Sounds great
- There's crafting from storage, but the range is surprisingly low for the amount of boxes you'll end up with over time.
- Performance is a bit weird, more on that later
- Combat is legitimately horrible
Okay so, Perf:
Performance is weird since the game runs about the same on low and high details (RTX 3070). With textures set to High, setting anything else higher than low gave me a VRAM warning, so I played mostly on low with textures on high, 1080p with DLSS on Quality/Balanced. Hit 70-80 fps for the most part with dips to low 60's during Storms, GPU usage 99/100% almost all the time. Storms murder the framerate no matter what settings I used. At locked 60 fps, the GPU was often not fully utilized, so there was some headroom. For the last 10hrs or so of the game, I dropped Textures to Low and everything else to high and the performance was... About the same. Maybe a little worse.
That said, the game likes a strong CPU. I've run into a CPU bottleneck once, on a 9800X3D, when I had a bunch of buildings with moving parts in a small area (wind turbines). At least I think that was the cause.
Combat: it feels like someone from the team decided they wanted combat in the game two month before early access release date. All combat related animations range from bad to dreadful, feedback from using weapons, both melee and ranged is unsatisfactory to put it lightly (except the sound I suppose), ranged weapons and their ammo are wayyy too heavy for their own good. An Assault Rifle weights 20 kilograms and 100 rounds for the AR weight 10 kgs. Stupid. Especially considering how much garbage you'll be hauling back and forth to your boat.
Enemy AI is extremely simplistic. There are two archetypes of enemies: small dudes that just bumrush you in large groups and bite your ankles and rolling metal balls that shoot you when they feel threatened. Small dudes can hit you through walls, especially the flying ones.
But, despite these issues, the game was hella fun. I guess I was lucky I didn't experience some of the physics glitches some people did, so read more reviews about those.

I played the demo and that whole thing of tossing trash in an industrial size shredder using physics was quite satisfying. I read the reviews that cautioned waiting because it was still early access and had performance issues. I saw people say it was too expensive for its value.
Still, I'm an adult with a good job and I was just jonesing for more shreddy shreddy, so after trying to resist a day, I broke down and bought it. I did start to feel the performance issues at the first major stop. Still, I wouldn't call that a deal breaker. The real issue is that the gimmick of shredding things didn't justify a $30 game and it already started to feel like a chore to play in less than 10 hours. I may play more to try and get my money's worth, but I do regret the purchase.
This game is guilty of something I dislike, which is when skills and level ups don't provide anything new. All the "enhancement" points just increase your stats (more HP, more power reserves, better energy efficiency, more carrying capacity, etc.) and have no real meaningful gameplay change. The skills also just unlock slightly better versions of things you unlocked in the demo. 3 tiers of storage with just more space. 3 tiers of solar panel. 3 tiers of wind turbine. There's 3 types of gun, with the rifle being just a bit better than the pistol version. Backpacks? Just more storage of energy or fuel. Enemies feel all the same and many are just different color reskins.
The demo was great fun and sold me on the game. The game is just more of the same at the moment and really doesn't justify the high price point in my opinion. Wish I had listened to the other warnings.
Maybe a year or two of development will make this into something really special.

Bug in tutorial where the hangar door doesn't even fully open for your ship to go through pretty much ruined any hope I have for this game being in a state of being playable. Refunded and will revisit when game breaking bugs don't happen within the first hour of playing.

I dont know what they broke between the demo and the main game but the performance is completely unacceptable. Even on the lowest possible settings I cannot hit 60fps on a fairly strong PC.

Game is fun, laggy spikes and glitchy elevators but my biggest gripe is there is no floating ocean plastics. There should be islands of floating plastics and materials we can gather for our building leisure.

The Last Caretaker is a game I didn't know I was needing. Amazing story & world. Crafting, survival, exploration. All the things that tickle the best parts of my brain. 36 hours in and still haven't even scratched the surface. I did get invited to help test so I received a free copy. Would have bought it anyway
