Wanted to like it, performance was fine, the actual gameplay feels stiffer than dark souls 1 and animation locks you like crazy. Tried to get a feel for it but it just felt like the character and the enemies were operating at two different levels of speed where the enemies can act uninterrupted constantly and you need 7 business days to deliver your attacks to their address.

Fun game so far but EXTREMELY AWFUL performance. Forced FSR/TSR, really? and a recomended 50% of the resolution on ultra preset is a joke.
Update
: After the Patch 1.3, the performance is way better, went from 45~50fps on 1440p with FSR on 100% resolution, to around 85~90fps with the same graphics configuration. So far my only complain is that there is no option to play at a native resolution, and using TSR or FSR, even at 100% resolution, has an ugly blurriness in motion. UE5 games are a hit or miss when it comes to performance and in this case it's a miss unfortunately (At least for my system).
The game needs a free demo for this exact reason.
Boss fights are pretty decent (from the ones I managed to play)
edit: I feel like it should be said that it shouldn't be industry standard to release games in a poorly optimised state just to patch it at a later date. Being critical and calling out obvious issues is what will help game releases in the future.
I'll probably give this game another go after the upcoming patches.

I want to hope that people see this, because I want to share something.
This game has overwhelmingly negative reviews right now. After reading them, I've seen that they are mostly complaining about performance. This is a completely valid complaint. Performance issues are almost always solved shortly after a game is released, so even if your system cannot handle it at this point, I recommend returning once the issues are solved.
If you believe that your system can handle this, then I definitely recommend trying out Wuchang. I believe that the gameplay is enjoyable and the graphics are lovely. I apologise for the poor quality of my actual game review, I have little experience with reviewing. Basically, I really like it so far. Thank you for reading.
For reference on specs that may run well with the game: I have an RTX 3060 and an i7 12700k and it runs well for me.

Wanted to give this game a good chance. I was excited for this. I had seen the mostly negative rating and checked the concerns and i can say now that as of this moment, they are correct. the Game has some massive performance issues. I tried just playing because sometimes gameplay can more than make up for lacking in other areas. I was unfortunately, not able to see much of the combat. I did fight the opening tutorial boss, i did fight through a few camps of enemies, and, at one point, during the boss fight, i was enjoying it and having fun. I was unable to experience more of that due to the overshadowing performance issues.
First off, I always check minimum and recommend specs, and i do exceed the recommended specs, running a RTX 3080, 32gb of ram, SSD and a I9 12900K.
at first, i tried running the game at my native 4k resolution, with the recommended settings of medium enabled and DLSS on, as it is in the recommended specs. on the recommended settings, the game just did not look good at all. the DLSS was automatically set to such a low resolution percent that with it, it just looked extremely fuzzy. i played with it like that for a bit and the latency was unplayable for a game like this where timing and fast reactions matter and gpu usage was pinned at max. I tried setting fps limits and it still maxed out.
I had spent, probably the first 30-45 minutes on just fiddling with the graphics settings. nothing seemed to want to make this run at a decent gpu usage, fps and latency. I even had it set back down to 1080P with mid settings, and thats when i believe i found the issue. at least from what i experienced, it just seems that the longer you play it, the higher the GPU usage gets. Its just not optimised right and there seems to be a backlog or something going on that just eventually consumes your gpu resources.
Lastly, and this may just be a me problem, but, it just never did end up visually looking nearly as good as the gameplay trailers. I understand that they have purpose built, top dollar pc's for the development and testing, but, in my mind, if i meet or exceed your recommended specs, i expect it to look and run at least somewhat comparable and close to what your advertising, and just never got there.
Gameplay has potential and was fun for what i got to experience. took a bit of getting used to and somewhat different than other souls like. did not see the ability to block, maybe thats a weapon skill or unlock down the line. or maybe it is just all dodging. and being somewhat different is good. you want to be unique and stand out instead of being a cop y and paste.
story from what i experienced was.... a bit disconnected and dislodging. felt a little like i was just being jolted from one direction to another without ever really knowing what was going on.
sound design was..... mid. large difference between cutscenes audio, game world audio and dialogue audio. like, the same character would sound quiet in a cutscene with poor audio quality and then sound loud and crisp in interactive dialogue. was very weird. but overall, in general, some sounds were cool, and some were bland. very much a mixed bag.
and, just something that bugged me personally, very little interaction between your character and the items in the world. and by that, i just mean that there no collision or hitbox for your model and the world models. swing your sword at a wall, and it just goes through it instead of hitting it, bouncing off, or even leaving a mark. large pots and vases that scream "break me" have the same effect. as to all the rest of the objects in the world. and for me, that just makes me feel more of an observer than an active participant of the game world.
i rambled. what im trying to say is - dont buy, wait. watch the reviews and updates and see if they decide to fix the performance issues. maybe buy on a heavy sale. at its current price, i cannot recommend it. honestly, feels like an early access.

No performance issues on my end, running an i7-14700KF with an RTX 4070.
So this review I will focus in the game, not performance.
Graphics:
Visuals are just okay. The background scenery can look stunning at times, but overall, it's nothing groundbreaking. Lighting and effects are decent, but character models and animations leave a lot to be desired for an Unreal 5 game.
Main Character:
The protagonist is completely lifeless, no facial animations, no reactions, just blankly staring into the void while NPCs talk to her. It honestly feels like interacting with a mannequin. Maybe that was intentional? She’s definitely caked up tho.
Combat:
Combat looks like it should be good... but it’s not. Hit detection is inconsistent, and most attacks lack any real feedback or weight. Combos are extremely limited, and many weapon movesets feel more flashy than functional.
Example: the lance has a move where you jump back and thrust forward, but the hit lands behind your previous position, which makes absolutely no sense in practice. Unless an enemy is sprinting straight at you or somehow teleports behind you, that move is useless. It feels like the combat animations were designed for trailers, not gameplay.
AI & Design:
Enemy AI is embarrassingly bad. The first boss can be cheesed by simply staying above her while she runs into a wall on loop. Enemies sometimes leap off cliffs for no reason.
They include tutorial tips like “how to defeat shielded enemies” but the actual tactic is always just: mash attack, win anyway. There’s no depth, no strategy, just repetitive button smashing. It's boring.
Final Thoughts:
I’m not refunding it, in my case, due to regional pricing and currency conversion, I paid way less than half of what most of you probably did, so it’s not a big loss. But I definitely don’t think this game is worth full price.
It feels like someone said, “What if we made a Wukong-style game… but with Eve from Stellar Blade?” And then nobody had any other ideas, so they just shipped it as-is. No real follow-through, no core gameplay loop, just empty flash with nothing under the surface.

I actually kind of feel like fool. in the current gaming landscape, I should have known better than to buy the deluxe version of a soulslike i hadnt even tried a demo of. but Wuchang looked so good I was SURE it couldn't fail.
i know i've BARELY clocked in any time, but Wuchang's performance is abysmal. if i can play Wukong at max settings, theres no reason this game should both LOOK like this and PLAY like this. died a few times due to frame drop. gonna wait for some performance patches. i encourage you to do the same.
Update: updated some stuff and lowered a few settings and it runs much smoother, but im still confused that I HAD to, as im over the recommended specs. still has weird frame drop sometimes and looks nowhere near as good as the gameplay videos, but its definitely playable now. still hope the devs make good on their word and roll out some optimization though.

The Honest and Detailed Review from a 3K-Hour Souls-Like Veteran
First and foremost — yes, this is a genuinely positive review, and no, I wasn’t paid a single cent to write this. I swear by the very feathers Wuchang wears. 1. Performance (the most debated topic so far) I’m running i7-14700KF with an RTX 4070 Ti SUPER — a high-end setup. I rarely face performance issues with my system, so when I do, it's usually a problem on the game’s side. That’s why I prepared my system carefully for this game. For context: I’ve manually increased my virtual memory from 2GB to 20GB to ensure smooth operation, my cpu is turbo-boosted to 5.4GHz (from 3.4), and my GPU is correctly clocked and cooled. With that setup, I launched the game at 2K resolution, set all settings to Medium, enabled DLSS + Frame Gen, and ran the game in Fullscreen Windowed mode. I averaged 140 FPS, with rare drops to 110 during intense combat. After switching to High settings across the board, the game still ran smoothly at around 100–120 FPS. Yes, performance issues exist — I've seen other reviews. But in my case, the game runs perfectly, with zero crashes, minimal stuttering (expected in fast-paced fights), and no frame pacing issues. It’s important to note that the game’s graphical complexity isn’t very high (more on that below), so even mid-range setups might find a performance sweet spot with a bit of tweaking. 2. Graphics Let’s be honest: this isn’t Black Myth Wukong, and it’s not Dark Souls 3 either. Wuchang lands somewhere in the middle. The details, animations, lighting, facial expressions, and even clothing and hair physics — all are solid. On a high-end system, I’d say it's a 6/10, elevated to a 8/10 thanks to resolution and stable FPS. I’ve only played about two hours so far, but the environmental design already feels immersive. The landscapes are beautiful, the armor designs are rich and grounded, and the natural scenery captures the spirit of the historical time period the game is set in. The artistic style is distinct and focused, not overly flashy or distracting from the gameplay is what I am saying. If you approach the game with low expectations or nitpick every small thing, you’ll obviously find flaws, but no game is perfect, especially on release day. What really matters is that Wuchang has its own visual identity that supports its dark narrative tone and enhances immersion. And it feels so after just about of hour into the game. 3. Gameplay Here’s where I must be a bit more critical — combat feels a little stiff and simplified, especially by modern Souls-like standards. The first moments with the controller gave me a good impression, movement is intuitive and animations flow well enough. But after trying multiple weapons, I noticed a lack of depth in some movesets. The short sword, for instance, feels smooth, like dancing mid-air. But the axe is sluggish and clunky. That said, this is not necessarily bad — it's about finding what suits your style. I’d rate the weapon design and movesets 6-7 out of 10 in terms of complexity and fluidity, and I have not seen all of them obviously. Still, the combat system is serviceable, and above all, familiar. It’s that classic Souls-like rhythm: dodging, timing, resource management. There's Magic in the game as well — a surprisingly effective addition. I’ve only scratched the surface of the spell system, but I can already see it adding meaningful variety to encounters. And I haven’t even mentioned the beautiful japanese-style sorceress in minimal armor wielding a long magical katana. Call it a trope — I call it art. In short: this is our beloved Souls-like formula with a few twists — solid movement, decent combat, unique weapons, and promising magic mechanics. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s definitely engaging. 4. Story I haven’t seen enough of the story to judge it deeply yet. However, it’s clear that: - there is a narrative, and it’s there from the start thankfully. - side quests exist, encouraging players to stay attentive. - there seem to be romantic undertones, though I haven't seen them unfold yet. The story is simple and linear for now, but that’s often a strength in this genre. You’re not bombarded with exposition. Instead, you're given just enough to stay intrigued. And most importantly — this simple story adds to the experience, and it is all that matters really. 5. Difficulty & Balance With over 3,000 hours in the genre, I can confidently say that Wuchang feels easy, at least in the first two hours. Everything is intuitive and linear so far, with a gentle learning curve. The game does not offer multiple difficulty settings, which is normal for the genre. You get stronger by farming xp (or whatever the local equivalent of "souls" is), and that alone can give you a soft difficulty slider. If you’re new to Souls-likes — Wuchang is very beginner-friendly. 6. Sound & Music This part surprised me a little. I’m usually drawn to powerful, orchestral soundtracks like those in Elden Ring or Dark Souls. But in Wuchang, the music is more ambient and culturally grounded. You’ll mostly hear soft bamboo flutes, low ambient tones, and natural sounds like running water, rustling grass, and wind through trees, etc. It’s subtle — not meant to hype you up, but to pull you into the world’s melancholy and decay. There’s nothing bombastic or cinematic YET, but it works well with the tone. Perhaps I missed some of the deeper music cues, being so focused on progression and combat but still, the sound design fits greatly, and sometimes that’s all you need. Final Verdict I'm not here to speak for everyone. According to launch-day reviews, Wuchang currently sits at 22% positive — overwhelmingly negative. And I saw the red flags too: early bug reports, tech complaints, scathing takes. But I still bought the game on release day, booted it up, and gave it a fair shot. And guess what? I’m glad I did. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a good game. A solid, competent, and beautiful entry in the Souls-like genre. It runs well, has artistic flair, and offers exactly what fans of the genre crave: challenge, exploration, mystery, and progression. It may not innovate heavily. It may not blow your mind in the first hour. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. In a world where marketing and viral reviews often dictate our experience before we even touch a game, sometimes you need to just play it yourself. And hey, you can always set a timer for 1 hour and 58 minutes, take a few screenshots, and refund it if it’s not for you. But if you’re like me, you might just find yourself diving deeper than you expected. P.S. Fresh windows installation when doom released recently. Computer is running at it's peek. getting around 100 fps, dips low as 40 in combat. No im not turning up scaling and frame gen. 100fps is fine, you fix the frametime issues and contact me when u have updates.

Wuchang is a Frankenstein's monster put together using bits and pieces of Miyazaki's past games with Chinese wuxia elements. It is a soulslike game FOR THE SAKE OF BEING SOULSLIKE. The issue is it only harvested the disgusting parts of FromSoft games but almost nothing good. E.g. weird terrain design that you just "trips" and fall to your death in a...puddle of water, or some random mob with aggression that puts Consort Radahn to shame WHILST having infinite poise, or boss with random aoe attack that HAS ZERO INDICATION OR MOMENTUM. The game tries tooooooooooooooo hard to be a soulslike and has become beyond twisted as a result.
Oh did I mention there's NO JUMPING? There's also no seamless transition to get on a ladder (you need an interact button to start climbing), and random mobs in the beginning can TWO SHOT you. Even Miyazaki himself will puke his dinner from yesterday all out on the floor seeing these things.

Their effort to inject a specific culture into every corner of the game is obvious—and understandable. However, I believe the virus that came from China had a different name. I'll finish it, and maybe change my review, but often I just find that I'm not having a lot of fun while playing.Positives -
- Level design is well done. With most games, I try to go the way that won't lead to progression first so I don't miss anything, and in this game I found that while it was hard to tell which way lead to progression, I usually ended up going the optional way and looping back around to progress again. The shortcuts and ways that the level links up is done quite well. - Boss design so far has been pretty cool (except a certain woman in a water area who was rather dull). - I like the madness mechanic, it's fun. - Funny dancing guy. - Outfits are pretty cool.Performance/Optimization
This game isn't graphically any more impressive than other games larger in scope and that have released before it, yet, it has forced up-scaling, and performs worse than those other better looking games. (not including MHW lmao). If you don't mind ghosting and grainy artifacts, then up-scaling/FG will make this game playable for anyone with a mid range set-up. I didn't really have any issues with performance consistency, and found it perfectly playable at mostly stable 90+ FPS, but I just think that there isn't really any justification for the lack of optimization that requires up-scaling to get decent and stable frames, and I'm really tired of games relying so heavily on DLSS/FSR. The recommended/minimum specs should NEVER be tested and listed with up-scaling on. Up-scaling tech is fantastic, but it's a monkeys paw, because while it should allow us to get more frames at higher resolutions with heavy tech like ray-tracing, instead, it's used in place of good optimization, and we end up with a net zero gain overall, or even worse than where we were before up-scaling was around.Story
I found the narrative to be overall a bit... Directionless? I understand that Souls games are very vague and the narrative is mostly optional, but they always make sure that from the jump, you understand the big, overarching goals (Kill these four dudes and use their souls, burn the tree, link the flame etc etc). In this game, maybe it's just my brain-rot addled mind, but I have no idea wtf my overall goal is, I get the smaller goals, go here, find this person etc, but I feel like I don't really have a reason to care about anything? Like, why am I doing all this? Did I miss it somewhere? I need a motivator, and since loot is kinda sparse, a narrative one would be good.Combat
Animations
The animations in this game are all quite flashy, you do spins, and jumps and flips, and during all of that, you might get a hit-box out two or three times, meanwhile, while you're spinning around before your attack actually comes out, you're wide open to getting hit. Flashy animations are awesome in character action games, DMC, Bayonetta, MGRR, Nier etc, they're amazing games with flashy combat. Flashy animations are just kinda frustrating in a souls game though most of the time, I mostly don't use weapon arts with long animations in Elden Ring unless I'm OP'd. I want to get a hit out, and be able to back off. That's the point of a souls game right? Taking hits bad, enemies do a heap of damage and can stun-lock you, you don't want to risk dying and having to run back. They have this "Clash" system there, to mitigate this a bit, so you can do a flashy combo, but it feels like a band-aid on something that doesn't feel like it fits. Pulling a combo string and hoping the move with the clash is timed when the enemy decides to attack, and not in between, just feels cumbersome when you can just poke with a spear instead and reliably avoid the risk.Fights
I have a few issues with the combat itself in this game, first, you can get hit during your get-up animation, which is ridiculous. Sometimes you'll perfect dodge an attack, but end up still within a lingering hit-box, so you'll take damage anyway. Weapons and hit reactions feel a bit lackluster.Progression
Progression in this feels really underwhelming. I don't feel like I have a lot of fine control over my build, and leveling up doesn't feel all that impactful. The skill tree is an interesting idea, but I feel like tying the skills directly to specific weapons, and having us allocate stats individually like other souls games would have both made the weapons feel more important, and given us more of a sense of accountability and ownership over our game-play.Gooner Stuff

For me, I need good loot/progression, really satisfying combat, a really engaging story, or the holy grail of all three... This game just doesn't quite hit the mark on any of these for me. I might’ve been able to forgive the developers for releasing it in a bad state since it was their first project and pretty ambitious.
however, they “patched” the game by removing the ability to run the game at native resolution and then claimed that this was a performance patch when in actuality and in practice this was not and all it did was set the default rendering resolution of the game to DLSS quality if you put the slider to 100% it will match the performance of the scaler at 67% effectively forcing dlss quality or fsr quality this is f***ing bulls**t and probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen a developer do to prevent refunds. You gotta be f***ing kidding me I hope learn a valuable lesson behind this.

Game forces Temporal Anti Aliasing always on. This means that even if you have the latest hardware to run this in 4k, you will still be forced to see blurry textures due to how craptastic TAA is.
For anyone running 4k, AA solutions are meaningless and uneeded for most monitor sizes
Devs, allow us to disable TAA, its not hard, theres even a Unreal Engine console command for it:

So far, I'm really enjoying Wuchang. The combat is excellent, I really like the melee combat and dodging mixed with magic and abilities. The level design is incredible, clearly inspired by Dark Souls, and the NPC interactions reflect that as well. I've seen a lot of people complaining about performance. I know my PC isn’t the standard (9800X3D / RTX 5090 / 64GB), but I haven’t had any performance issues so far. Once I finish the game, I’ll come back to complete the review, but for now, I’d easily put it on the same level as Lies of P, for example.

Wanted to like it, performance was fine, the actual gameplay feels stiffer than dark souls 1 and animation locks you like crazy. Tried to get a feel for it but it just felt like the character and the enemies were operating at two different levels of speed where the enemies can act uninterrupted constantly and you need 7 business days to deliver your attacks to their address.

Update
: After the Patch 1.3, the performance is way better, went from 45~50fps on 1440p with FSR on 100% resolution, to around 85~90fps with the same graphics configuration. So far my only complain is that there is no option to play at a native resolution, and using TSR or FSR, even at 100% resolution, has an ugly blurriness in motion. UE5 games are a hit or miss when it comes to performance and in this case it's a miss unfortunately (At least for my system).
The game needs a free demo for this exact reason.
Boss fights are pretty decent (from the ones I managed to play)
edit: I feel like it should be said that it shouldn't be industry standard to release games in a poorly optimised state just to patch it at a later date. Being critical and calling out obvious issues is what will help game releases in the future.
I'll probably give this game another go after the upcoming patches.

I want to hope that people see this, because I want to share something.
This game has overwhelmingly negative reviews right now. After reading them, I've seen that they are mostly complaining about performance. This is a completely valid complaint. Performance issues are almost always solved shortly after a game is released, so even if your system cannot handle it at this point, I recommend returning once the issues are solved.
If you believe that your system can handle this, then I definitely recommend trying out Wuchang. I believe that the gameplay is enjoyable and the graphics are lovely. I apologise for the poor quality of my actual game review, I have little experience with reviewing. Basically, I really like it so far. Thank you for reading.
For reference on specs that may run well with the game: I have an RTX 3060 and an i7 12700k and it runs well for me.

Wanted to give this game a good chance. I was excited for this. I had seen the mostly negative rating and checked the concerns and i can say now that as of this moment, they are correct. the Game has some massive performance issues. I tried just playing because sometimes gameplay can more than make up for lacking in other areas. I was unfortunately, not able to see much of the combat. I did fight the opening tutorial boss, i did fight through a few camps of enemies, and, at one point, during the boss fight, i was enjoying it and having fun. I was unable to experience more of that due to the overshadowing performance issues.
First off, I always check minimum and recommend specs, and i do exceed the recommended specs, running a RTX 3080, 32gb of ram, SSD and a I9 12900K.
at first, i tried running the game at my native 4k resolution, with the recommended settings of medium enabled and DLSS on, as it is in the recommended specs. on the recommended settings, the game just did not look good at all. the DLSS was automatically set to such a low resolution percent that with it, it just looked extremely fuzzy. i played with it like that for a bit and the latency was unplayable for a game like this where timing and fast reactions matter and gpu usage was pinned at max. I tried setting fps limits and it still maxed out.
I had spent, probably the first 30-45 minutes on just fiddling with the graphics settings. nothing seemed to want to make this run at a decent gpu usage, fps and latency. I even had it set back down to 1080P with mid settings, and thats when i believe i found the issue. at least from what i experienced, it just seems that the longer you play it, the higher the GPU usage gets. Its just not optimised right and there seems to be a backlog or something going on that just eventually consumes your gpu resources.
Lastly, and this may just be a me problem, but, it just never did end up visually looking nearly as good as the gameplay trailers. I understand that they have purpose built, top dollar pc's for the development and testing, but, in my mind, if i meet or exceed your recommended specs, i expect it to look and run at least somewhat comparable and close to what your advertising, and just never got there.
Gameplay has potential and was fun for what i got to experience. took a bit of getting used to and somewhat different than other souls like. did not see the ability to block, maybe thats a weapon skill or unlock down the line. or maybe it is just all dodging. and being somewhat different is good. you want to be unique and stand out instead of being a cop y and paste.
story from what i experienced was.... a bit disconnected and dislodging. felt a little like i was just being jolted from one direction to another without ever really knowing what was going on.
sound design was..... mid. large difference between cutscenes audio, game world audio and dialogue audio. like, the same character would sound quiet in a cutscene with poor audio quality and then sound loud and crisp in interactive dialogue. was very weird. but overall, in general, some sounds were cool, and some were bland. very much a mixed bag.
and, just something that bugged me personally, very little interaction between your character and the items in the world. and by that, i just mean that there no collision or hitbox for your model and the world models. swing your sword at a wall, and it just goes through it instead of hitting it, bouncing off, or even leaving a mark. large pots and vases that scream "break me" have the same effect. as to all the rest of the objects in the world. and for me, that just makes me feel more of an observer than an active participant of the game world.
i rambled. what im trying to say is - dont buy, wait. watch the reviews and updates and see if they decide to fix the performance issues. maybe buy on a heavy sale. at its current price, i cannot recommend it. honestly, feels like an early access.

No performance issues on my end, running an i7-14700KF with an RTX 4070.
So this review I will focus in the game, not performance.
Graphics:
Visuals are just okay. The background scenery can look stunning at times, but overall, it's nothing groundbreaking. Lighting and effects are decent, but character models and animations leave a lot to be desired for an Unreal 5 game.
Main Character:
The protagonist is completely lifeless, no facial animations, no reactions, just blankly staring into the void while NPCs talk to her. It honestly feels like interacting with a mannequin. Maybe that was intentional? She’s definitely caked up tho.
Combat:
Combat looks like it should be good... but it’s not. Hit detection is inconsistent, and most attacks lack any real feedback or weight. Combos are extremely limited, and many weapon movesets feel more flashy than functional.
Example: the lance has a move where you jump back and thrust forward, but the hit lands behind your previous position, which makes absolutely no sense in practice. Unless an enemy is sprinting straight at you or somehow teleports behind you, that move is useless. It feels like the combat animations were designed for trailers, not gameplay.
AI & Design:
Enemy AI is embarrassingly bad. The first boss can be cheesed by simply staying above her while she runs into a wall on loop. Enemies sometimes leap off cliffs for no reason.
They include tutorial tips like “how to defeat shielded enemies” but the actual tactic is always just: mash attack, win anyway. There’s no depth, no strategy, just repetitive button smashing. It's boring.
Final Thoughts:
I’m not refunding it, in my case, due to regional pricing and currency conversion, I paid way less than half of what most of you probably did, so it’s not a big loss. But I definitely don’t think this game is worth full price.
It feels like someone said, “What if we made a Wukong-style game… but with Eve from Stellar Blade?” And then nobody had any other ideas, so they just shipped it as-is. No real follow-through, no core gameplay loop, just empty flash with nothing under the surface.

I actually kind of feel like fool. in the current gaming landscape, I should have known better than to buy the deluxe version of a soulslike i hadnt even tried a demo of. but Wuchang looked so good I was SURE it couldn't fail.
i know i've BARELY clocked in any time, but Wuchang's performance is abysmal. if i can play Wukong at max settings, theres no reason this game should both LOOK like this and PLAY like this. died a few times due to frame drop. gonna wait for some performance patches. i encourage you to do the same.
Update: updated some stuff and lowered a few settings and it runs much smoother, but im still confused that I HAD to, as im over the recommended specs. still has weird frame drop sometimes and looks nowhere near as good as the gameplay videos, but its definitely playable now. still hope the devs make good on their word and roll out some optimization though.

First and foremost — yes, this is a genuinely positive review, and no, I wasn’t paid a single cent to write this. I swear by the very feathers Wuchang wears. 1. Performance (the most debated topic so far) I’m running i7-14700KF with an RTX 4070 Ti SUPER — a high-end setup. I rarely face performance issues with my system, so when I do, it's usually a problem on the game’s side. That’s why I prepared my system carefully for this game. For context: I’ve manually increased my virtual memory from 2GB to 20GB to ensure smooth operation, my cpu is turbo-boosted to 5.4GHz (from 3.4), and my GPU is correctly clocked and cooled. With that setup, I launched the game at 2K resolution, set all settings to Medium, enabled DLSS + Frame Gen, and ran the game in Fullscreen Windowed mode. I averaged 140 FPS, with rare drops to 110 during intense combat. After switching to High settings across the board, the game still ran smoothly at around 100–120 FPS. Yes, performance issues exist — I've seen other reviews. But in my case, the game runs perfectly, with zero crashes, minimal stuttering (expected in fast-paced fights), and no frame pacing issues. It’s important to note that the game’s graphical complexity isn’t very high (more on that below), so even mid-range setups might find a performance sweet spot with a bit of tweaking. 2. Graphics Let’s be honest: this isn’t Black Myth Wukong, and it’s not Dark Souls 3 either. Wuchang lands somewhere in the middle. The first moments with the controller gave me a good impression, movement is intuitive and animations flow well enough. But after trying multiple weapons, I noticed a lack of depth in some movesets. The short sword, for instance, feels smooth, like dancing mid-air. But the axe is sluggish and clunky. That said, this is not necessarily bad — it's about finding what suits your style. I’d rate the weapon design and movesets 6-7 out of 10 in terms of complexity and fluidity, and I have not seen all of them obviously. Still, the combat system is serviceable, and above all, familiar. The story is simple and linear for now, but that’s often a strength in this genre. You’re not bombarded with exposition. Instead, you're given just enough to stay intrigued. And most importantly — this simple story adds to the experience, and it is all that matters really. 5. Difficulty & Balance With over 3,000 hours in the genre, I can confidently say that Wuchang feels easy, at least in the first two hours. Everything is intuitive and linear so far, with a gentle learning curve. The game does not offer multiple difficulty settings, which is normal for the genre. You get stronger by farming xp (or whatever the local equivalent of "souls" is), and that alone can give you a soft difficulty slider. If you’re new to Souls-likes — Wuchang is very beginner-friendly. 6. Sound & Music This part surprised me a little. I’m usually drawn to powerful, orchestral soundtracks like those in Elden Ring or Dark Souls. But in Wuchang, the music is more ambient and culturally grounded. You’ll mostly hear soft bamboo flutes, low ambient tones, and natural sounds like running water, rustling grass, and wind through trees, etc. It’s subtle — not meant to hype you up, but to pull you into the world’s melancholy and decay. There’s nothing bombastic or cinematic YET, but it works well with the tone. Perhaps I missed some of the deeper music cues, being so focused on progression and combat but still, the sound design fits greatly, and sometimes that’s all you need. Final Verdict I'm not here to speak for everyone. According to launch-day reviews, Wuchang currently sits at 22% positive — overwhelmingly negative. And I saw the red flags too: early bug reports, tech complaints, scathing takes. But I still bought the game on release day, booted it up, and gave it a fair shot. And guess what? I’m glad I did. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a good game. A solid, competent, and beautiful entry in the Souls-like genre. It runs well, has artistic flair, and offers exactly what fans of the genre crave: challenge, exploration, mystery, and progression. It may not innovate heavily. It may not blow your mind in the first hour. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. In a world where marketing and viral reviews often dictate our experience before we even touch a game, sometimes you need to just play it yourself. And hey, you can always set a timer for 1 hour and 58 minutes, take a few screenshots, and refund it if it’s not for you. Wuchang is a Frankenstein's monster put together using bits and pieces of Miyazaki's past games with Chinese wuxia elements. It is a soulslike game FOR THE SAKE OF BEING SOULSLIKE. The issue is it only harvested the disgusting parts of FromSoft games but almost nothing good. E.g. weird terrain design that you just "trips" and fall to your death in a...puddle of water, or some random mob with aggression that puts Consort Radahn to shame WHILST having infinite poise, or boss with random aoe attack that HAS ZERO INDICATION OR MOMENTUM. The game tries tooooooooooooooo hard to be a soulslike and has become beyond twisted as a result.
Oh did I mention there's NO JUMPING? There's also no seamless transition to get on a ladder (you need an interact button to start climbing), and random mobs in the beginning can TWO SHOT you. Even Miyazaki himself will puke his dinner from yesterday all out on the floor seeing these things.

- Level design is well done. With most games, I try to go the way that won't lead to progression first so I don't miss anything, and in this game I found that while it was hard to tell which way lead to progression, I usually ended up going the optional way and looping back around to progress again. The shortcuts and ways that the level links up is done quite well. - Boss design so far has been pretty cool (except a certain woman in a water area who was rather dull). - I like the madness mechanic, it's fun. - Funny dancing guy. - Outfits are pretty cool.Performance/Optimization
This game isn't graphically any more impressive than other games larger in scope and that have released before it, yet, it has forced up-scaling, and performs worse than those other better looking games. (not including MHW lmao). If you don't mind ghosting and grainy artifacts, then up-scaling/FG will make this game playable for anyone with a mid range set-up. I didn't really have any issues with performance consistency, and found it perfectly playable at mostly stable 90+ FPS, but I just think that there isn't really any justification for the lack of optimization that requires up-scaling to get decent and stable frames, and I'm really tired of games relying so heavily on DLSS/FSR. The recommended/minimum specs should NEVER be tested and listed with up-scaling on. Up-scaling tech is fantastic, but it's a monkeys paw, because while it should allow us to get more frames at higher resolutions with heavy tech like ray-tracing, instead, it's used in place of good optimization, and we end up with a net zero gain overall, or even worse than where we were before up-scaling was around.Story
I found the narrative to be overall a bit... Directionless? I understand that Souls games are very vague and the narrative is mostly optional, but they always make sure that from the jump, you understand the big, overarching goals (Kill these four dudes and use their souls, burn the tree, link the flame etc etc). In this game, maybe it's just my brain-rot addled mind, but I have no idea wtf my overall goal is, I get the smaller goals, go here, find this person etc, but I feel like I don't really have a reason to care about anything? Like, why am I doing all this? Did I miss it somewhere? I need a motivator, and since loot is kinda sparse, a narrative one would be good.Combat
Animations
The animations in this game are all quite flashy, you do spins, and jumps and flips, and during all of that, you might get a hit-box out two or three times, meanwhile, while you're spinning around before your attack actually comes out, you're wide open to getting hit. Flashy animations are awesome in character action games, DMC, Bayonetta, MGRR, Nier etc, they're amazing games with flashy combat. Flashy animations are just kinda frustrating in a souls game though most of the time, I mostly don't use weapon arts with long animations in Elden Ring unless I'm OP'd. I want to get a hit out, and be able to back off. That's the point of a souls game right? Taking hits bad, enemies do a heap of damage and can stun-lock you, you don't want to risk dying and having to run back. They have this "Clash" system there, to mitigate this a bit, so you can do a flashy combo, but it feels like a band-aid on something that doesn't feel like it fits. Pulling a combo string and hoping the move with the clash is timed when the enemy decides to attack, and not in between, just feels cumbersome when you can just poke with a spear instead and reliably avoid the risk.Fights
I have a few issues with the combat itself in this game, first, you can get hit during your get-up animation, which is ridiculous. Sometimes you'll perfect dodge an attack, but end up still within a lingering hit-box, so you'll take damage anyway. Weapons and hit reactions feel a bit lackluster.Progression
Progression in this feels really underwhelming. I don't feel like I have a lot of fine control over my build, and leveling up doesn't feel all that impactful. The skill tree is an interesting idea, but I feel like tying the skills directly to specific weapons, and having us allocate stats individually like other souls games would have both made the weapons feel more important, and given us more of a sense of accountability and ownership over our game-play.Gooner Stuff

This game isn't BAD, I just don't find myself having a lot of fun while playing it, and when there are SO many good games to play right now, I don't feel like it's a time sink that I can recommend personally. For me, I need good loot/progression, really satisfying combat, a really engaging story, or the holy grail of all three... This game just doesn't quite hit the mark on any of these for me. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will really enjoy it, and I hope these devs are able to make more stuff, and refine their product. I'll change this review if my opinion shifts by the time I finish, I still don't find the optimization acceptable, and hope they work on it, but I won't hold my breath.19 votes funny

I might’ve been able to forgive the developers for releasing it in a bad state since it was their first project and pretty ambitious.
however, they “patched” the game by removing the ability to run the game at native resolution and then claimed that this was a performance patch when in actuality and in practice this was not and all it did was set the default rendering resolution of the game to DLSS quality if you put the slider to 100% it will match the performance of the scaler at 67% effectively forcing dlss quality or fsr quality this is f***ing bulls**t and probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen a developer do to prevent refunds. You gotta be f***ing kidding me I hope learn a valuable lesson behind this.

Game forces Temporal Anti Aliasing always on. This means that even if you have the latest hardware to run this in 4k, you will still be forced to see blurry textures due to how craptastic TAA is.
For anyone running 4k, AA solutions are meaningless and uneeded for most monitor sizes
Devs, allow us to disable TAA, its not hard, theres even a Unreal Engine console command for it:

I shouldnt be forced to use third party software to allow myself that graphical option.

So far, I'm really enjoying Wuchang. The combat is excellent, I really like the melee combat and dodging mixed with magic and abilities. The level design is incredible, clearly inspired by Dark Souls, and the NPC interactions reflect that as well. I've seen a lot of people complaining about performance. I know my PC isn’t the standard (9800X3D / RTX 5090 / 64GB), but I haven’t had any performance issues so far. Once I finish the game, I’ll come back to complete the review, but for now, I’d easily put it on the same level as Lies of P, for example.
