The game could've been great if it didn't stuck in development hell for five years, suffered a remake and then patreon page purge. As it is, it's a rewrite on a rewrite, that reduced a taboo story to some weird mix of mafia the gathering and those poker-to-see-nude mobile games that were popular a decade ago among middle schoolers. Unlike in the developer's other game, Summers Gone, which pretty much doesn't have any major plot and is all character interactions dating sim, Where it All Began tries to tell a coherent mafia story, and just fails at that, ending up throwing exposition at the player. "Dating" part is not much better. Nonsensical dating rules among the characters "you can't cause reasons", dating starts with dry humping each other and stops because MC doesn't feel like going through with it. Relationship development is sporadic at best, nonsensical at worst, and doesn't have clear progression - you go from hating each other to making out in a span of a chapter. Renders quality, music and animations are great and far above the benchmark, but I can't in good faith recommend this game unless you are looking for a slideshow of high-quality erotic renders that start for no reason, end for no reason, and never get to actual sex. Developer should've either went through with the original idea, restrictions or not, or admitted that it's impossible in the current market and focused on what is possible. As it is, it's disappointing to everyone. I honestly feed bad for the dev.
