I genuinely would have found more fun and fulfillment drenching a pile of money in gasoline and igniting it than playing the story for this expansion, it is that dreadful and boring. The story branches off several times over with lengthy sidequests to account for the fact that there is no real narrative, and even if there was it would have been truly awful considering the writing this time around. Curse of Osiris is often regarded as the worst expansion in Destiny 2 history, but in Bungie's constant attempts to innovate and outdo themselves, this completely blows it out of the water for almost triple the price.
The Matterspark system isn't fun and is CONSTANTLY forced down your throat (as is the new cannon), there is no new subclass, no new world exotics, nothing to chase and nothing to look forward to.
Never forget that Forsaken and Witch Queen were $40 and this is where we are now.
And to all the content creators that endlessly shilled and praised how good this expansion was going to be, you should be ashamed of yourselves, but I know you won't be.

This update is truly impressive. However, I sincerely hope they reconsider the implementation of the "New Gear" bonuses. The idea that the equipment I acquire now will eventually be inferior is discouraging. I understand the intention is likely to incentivize players to pursue newer gear, but for me it has the opposite effect. It reduces my motivation because I know my current gear will become outdated.

Didn't expect Edge of Fate to bang, but boy does it bang, Extremely impressed Bungie, bravo.
Apparently, this is a hot take, but I am entitled to my own opinion.
Let me preface this with a few things.
1) I have played Destiny through its entire lifespan, through all the highs and lows. Over 10K hours in D2 alone.
2) I have done practically everything there is to do in D2, every title earned and every raid and dungeon complete multitudes of times. Regular day 1 raider/dungeoneer with many day 1 contest clears under my belt.
3) I know the deep lore of this game quite well.
With that said, please consider my review as coming from the perspective of a hardcore player.
Just finished the campaign on Legendary difficulty. I went into this expansion expecting mediocre content, and was shockingly surprised. The gameplay was great in my opinion and the premise of the story is super interesting and creepy. The weird vibes are right where they should be. The missions and mechanics were surprisingly fun as hell and I enjoyed the extra puzzle solving throughout more than just a mission or two. Matterspark, mattermorph, and the relocator cannon all feel like dungeon-level mechanics which made the whole experience richer than just plowing through enemies and following waypoints to the final boss. Enemy density on Legendary was REALLY high which made the power fantasy feel really potent.
Edge of Fate finally provides an onboarding experience that felt smooth and not overwhelming at all. The metroidvania style flow to the destination felt super natural and I was never confused for doing things in whatever order I felt like. Plentiful amount of dialogue and in-game story moments that provided depth, backstory, and context to the whole thing. Shoutout to the voice actors by the way (especially Lodi and Drifter VAs) for some truly amazing performances. For once I can say this is a fantastic point for new players to come into D2 and be part of the story in a way they haven't been able to since D2 came out. No need to know much of anything from the previous expansions to get the important details as the interactions between characters provide the necessary context on where we came from and what is going on currently. I strongly recommend anyone who has never played Destiny to consider starting here.
I am struggling to understand why this expansion is getting so much hate in the reviews. To me, this is an overwhelming success. This one is up there with Witch Queen and The Final Shape for me, despite the somewhat smaller scale to the destination. The narrative was very strong imo, and I loved the granularity in dialogue and side quests to get lots of context and scope. I think we may be in a situation where Destiny fans are in a polarized disagreement about what we want to see in the game going forward, but I am 100% on board with the Fate Saga and putting the Nine in the spotlight.
For the first time in a long time, I feel like Bungie wrote a narrative that is for someone like me, and I am overjoyed to have mystery and intrigue in spades. Bungie, you are definitely onto something here, and I cannot wait to see where we go next with this.

still in early hours at the time of writing but i'm liking this a lot so far
reminds me of vanilla d1, story revolves around space mystery instead of individual villains which imo is a fantastic start for the new saga and i hope they keep it this way throughout this campaign and beyond.
gameplay wise i'm not fully sold on matterspark yet but at least it's fresher than the usual "grab ball throw ball", "collect motes" and "interact with thing to remove shield" mechanics so that's something. I like the level design seems to be tighter and there's stuff to do later everywhere. It's an expansion worth playing slowly i think

I was on the fence about buying this after seeing so many negative reviews and posts from here and pretty much everywhere else. It wasn't until I spent half a day digging deeper that I found - it wasn't all negative, and what I heard finally convinced me that I would personally enjoy this DLC, even if so many others didn't.
I am only a few hours in, but I am absolutely loving it. Bungie is experimenting with a lot of new features that all have amazing potential for the game's future, and I'm troubled by what might happen to them if we disparage them too quickly.
The story content is also excellent thus far, leaning heavily into a large mystery that is intended to be a setup for the new saga. The voice acting and dialogue has been excellent, the music is possibly the best they have ever made, and the mission design has been fun, engaging, and different, with the involvement of new puzzle mechanics.
On the topic of those puzzle mechanics, many negative reviews seem to say the same thing about Matterspark in particular being egregiously overused. I disagree - Matterspark so far has been in nearly every mission but its usage is essentially a new tool for Bungie to lean on in order to create highly detailed and interwoven environments. In Edge of Fate, every room at times can have ventilation shafts or sublevels that you can zip your way through to get behind or over barriers in Matterspark form.
Between every Matterspark or Relocator puzzle are dense firefights, and the ratio between them is huge. This is NOT a campaign hellbent on making you do puzzles every few seconds, you are shooting and blowing things up far more than you are engaging with Matterspark.
All of this to say - don't listen to the hate if you're interested in Edge of Fate for literally any reason. There will always be an effort to hate the game by some folks, but it doesn't have to reflect the real quality of the content. Do your own research and don't judge it too harshly from afar.
Strangely enough, I think the marketing this time around (despite the trailers being well-made) might have left a lot to be desired, and thus from an outside perspective, the DLC seems lackluster.

Two Guardians are riding through Kepler. One says to the other:
“Joe, I bet you 100 silver you won’t eat my shit.”
“I will,” Joe replies.
They make the bet. Joe eats it, and Bill has to hand over 100 silver.
They keep riding. Joe starts feeling bad about it and says:
“Bill, I bet you 100 silver you won’t eat my shit.”
“I will.”
They make the bet. Bill eats it, and Joe hands over 100 silver.
They keep riding. Suddenly Bill says:
“Joe, seems to me we just played the new DLC for free.”

Imagine if, in Metroid Prime, every time you came across a wave beam door, instead of just swapping to wave beam, you had to hop around the room for 2 minutes to find the hidden wave beam station, which gave you wave beam for 15 seconds, and only could you shoot the door. You have to do this every single time you pass through the room.
That is this DLC.

Super cynical but I am very glad Bungie pulled it off. Matterspark is a good addition, unfortunately D2 players lack braincells and thumbs, so puzzle solving makes them see red. Story is probably the best we have gotten since witch queen, and Keplar feels super good to play, I am glad Bungie tried something totally new with the content structure.

Can we quit hating the game we all care for so much? Why are we giving so much hate to the game and wanting it to "just die already"? I do not want to see this game die. I just really want to see this game get better and for the CEO to understand that we love this game and we want to see love put into it. If you keep saying hateful things about this game you claim you "used to love" how can you ever expect for love and care to ever be put back into it from the devs.

This campaign is the most basic, boring and soulsucking experience ive ever had to endure. The hardest part is trying not to fall asleep while playing it.
All you is become a ball, spend 5 minutes looking for a hole in the wall, to then open the door and kill some enemies. Rinse and repeat for 5 hours. do NOT buy until this studio gets their act together

I appreciate trying to implement "puzzles" into your campaign missions but HOLY SHIT WHY IS EVERY SINGLE ONE THE MOST TEDIOUS SLOG FULL OF BACKTRACKING AND BUFF REFRESHING NONSENSE????? I LOVE BEING FORCED TO PARKOUR AS A BALL OF SHIT THAT CAN'T JUMP AND GETTING WIPED DURING A BOSS FOR MY SINS (incorrectly boosting while jumping). Voice acting for Ikora feels off, SAG-AFTRA strike limited them I understand that. Soft sunsetting 95% of weapons and armor is a baffling choice. Power grind somehow got even more repetitive than it already was. Story isn't the best they've told, not the worst either. The only truly positive thing I have to say is that the armor changes seem like they'll EVENTUALLY be good and fun to build around, after getting some ironing out in a "sandbox update" half a year from now.
Edit: original review was "Warframe is free" which I put before actually playing the expansion. After playing this I wish I hadn't.

the ball thing is the dumbest shit ive ever had to play through. It's literally devs creating an issue, small passages, to then create the solution by making yourself into an uninteresting ball that you don't want to play as. Why make things that people actively would not want to interact. Other than that world is boring seems mostly the same as everything else prior but honestly worse. The devs simply do not play games and it shows.

Another D2 vet here, about 3.5k hours at the time of reviewing.
Obviously I’ve played this game a lot for some people, and not enough for others. I don’t no-life this game, I play several other MMOs and I’ve grown up playing shooters. I’m familiar with grind, with progression, with seasonal resets (which can be done poorly) and with quality content. That being said, I have some things I will be biased towards for my own enjoyment, but this will be as unbiased as it can be.
Let’s address some of the negatives. Destiny has struggled with introducing new characters it seems. They just kinda plop them in, and to me, there’s always some awkward rubbing off before they become truly interesting and their dialogue is engaging. Edge of Fate has that here, but it’s not terrible. And honestly, by the end of the story, the characters are very interesting. The future of what’s in store for them has me pondering possibilities and looking forward to more development. I give it a B.
I can also completely understand the frustration with the puzzle mechanics as at times it felt slightly overdone. I saw another reviewer write about how it broke the monotony of run to boss and kill, and I suppose that works. They were fine, having upgrades to chase for them is also good, but I don’t think it should’ve been a main advertising point. Matterspark was overhyped imo. To put it lightly, I hope it’s not in the raid. It’s a fine mechanic, just not something I want to engage with on the high end. C-
Now the elephant most people aren’t talking about: it’s fun to play the game again.
Destiny has been fun, but it’s been very isolated fun. You pick your mission for the gun you want, you go run it. You either have fun doing it or you don’t, and the mission is over. Repeat. While it’s certainly necessary to have the option to specifically chase items, the reward structure Edge of Fate has introduced is a complete game changer. World tiers are a FUN goal to shoot for. Incremental steps with increasing rewards, more difficult challenges, expansion of story and dialogue, not to mention personal challenges of running solo ops and fireteam ops with custom modifiers and doing your best to get the highest score, it is truly enjoying. It feels very reminiscent of D1 in a simple way. I can’t wait for these systems to expand, become more rewarding, and for more content. The portal, while NOT A REPLACEMENT for the world system, is extremely fun. Excellent design with a fun reward structure. A+
To conclude, Edge of Fate is very fun. If you want a FUN expansion, play it. Get through the story (the end of the story is WORTH it), and enjoy just playing the game again. Also, thank you Bungo for returning the OG menu music. Bonus points for that.
So far (without raid and higher tiers) I’d say Edge of Fate is at an A-, and a great raid with more to come will surely push it into a solid A rating.
Recommend.

TLDR: Stellar campaign, one of the best in destiny history. Destination and destination mechanics are alright - fairly cool if a little overused. However, this expansion is a broken, buggy mess (especially the sandbox), and it feels like absolutely nothing was tested ahead of time - half the exotics in the game became either bugged or completely non-functional over night, and the stats system is working completely differently from as advertised in some ways. Because of this reason, i cannot in good faith recommend this expansion to anyone until they fix things.
Campaign (9/10): Surprisingly very well put together. Story is genuinely one of the best that we have had in Destiny. If Witch Queen and Final Shape weren't backed by a 10 year saga of story, Edge of Fate would clear them easily.
Campaign Mechanics (6/10): They're okay at best. Matterspark is a bit overused and most of its puzzles are just "find the hole" but near the end of the campaign, the puzzles get much more interesting. Ultimately you're gonna use them in the campaign and then pretty much forget about them, so I really don't think there's too much to dislike here.
Destination (5/10): Once again, it's okay at best. The destination had a few very cool vistas which rival the best in the series, but the majority of the place was nowhere close to the kind of visual quality that we had in things like the throne world, pale heart, or even neomuna. Most of the zones just look like titan with a bunch of yellow crap everywhere.
Power Grind (1/10): Where do I even start... It sucks. it REALLY sucks. We have once again returned to the era of "number go up", and it is just as bad as everyone predicted it to be. You will likely not have fun with the endgame experience in this expansion unless you are fairly new to the Destiny scene. It just consists of running old activities ad infinitum and hoping that the drop is in the slot you need. It is not fun and i most likely will not be engaging with it after i finish with the raid. That being said, this is a sandbox change and is not something that you're paying for when you buy the expansion.
Sandbox Changes (0/10, could be an 8/10 if things actually worked): On paper, these are great. They add much more depth to buildcrafting than we had before (although still less than we had with the combat style mods pre-lightfall...). However, in practice, these systems are half-baked and buggier than you could possibly imagine. Half the exotics in the game broke overnight due to these changes, some of them like Contraverse Holds are not even functional at all. The stats are having far different effects to what were advertising, some giving less than half of the bonus that we were told before the expansion released. That being said, this is a sandbox change and is not something that you're paying for when you buy the expansion.
Overall: Stellar campaign, relatively bog standard destination mechanics, decent gameplay. My biggest gripes with the expansion are not the content itself, but the fact that barely any of it actually works as intended. Bungie laid off over 15% of their workforce over the last 2 years while the CEO bought literally millions of dollars of cars, some on the SAME DAY as the layoffs. The department that was hit the hardest was QA and playtesting, and you can REALLY fucking tell.
I simply cannot recommend this DLC because of this exact fact. I can excuse shoddy mechanics like matterspark because they are new - you are going to have to try and innovate for this exact reason. Vote with your wallets, folks. If bugged, broken, and half-baked systems are what we're gonna get, then I don't want to be a part of it. If Bungie pulls their act together and flushes out the c-suite with people who aren't just in it for lining their own pockets, maybe I'd consider recommending that you buy this.

Recommend.

Well, that wasn't taken well. And you know what? Fair enough. I'll leave the review up, but this won't be valid for much.
See you in a week.
