Requires the big, rushed, unstable, badly balanced, half-finished 4.0 patch to play.
BioGenesis does have potential to become one of the best stellaris DLC in a couple of months, but I can't recommend this mess.

The content looks wonderful. But it, as is customary, presented as a buggy mess. Prime example, which ought to be enough: The a.i. doesn´t build fleets, likely because it doesn´t try to produce alloys. Such obvious bugs should never be shipped with a release and Paradox needs to change it´s Quality Control.

Absolutely love all of the content in the DLC!
Everything added is insanely cool and fun and adds so much more variety and life to the game. Well on the level of Machine Age, another fantastic DLC. For the amount of content added the price is MORE than worth it, especially if bought via the season pass.
The 4.0 base update released alongside the DLC does have some bugs and issues as is to be expected, which should be kept in mind - but it does not affect the quality of the DLC content itself.

Wilderness is so incredibly fun, instantly became my favorite origin. The patch and DLC have a couple of issues, especially the UI but nothing gamebreaking, just a great expansion with a great patch overall.
Edit: Got to the endgame and man performance is BAD, even when playing with Gigastructural and dozens of mods the game didn't chug this much, But i am personally used to Paradox games being super laggy and at least i have experienced zero crashes, Still having a blast.
Personally i'd say that the DLC is very much worth the price as it seems most of the issues are related to the 4.0 patch itself, not the DLC, and the content of the DLC is very good.

I refunded this DLC but to buy it back a few days later. I knew it will still be plagued with bugs. I also knew my cats will need to skip a few dinners to pay for this DLC. Re-posting Calozard's post because it is 100% on point and its utter garbage that their post doesn't count towards overall reviews because of how they "received the game"
Post from Calozard
"Stellaris is one of the game I have played the most.
I love it. I also love seeing more organic content being introduced.
What I do not like, on the other hand, is pushing "play" a few days after an update and, playing 5 different game for about 80 years, trying out new features and older features, only to find out that they are ALL broken beyond comprehension.
Have the developpers tried playing with space fauna ? If so the guy reporting bugs and terrible UI should be fired, or maybe they should fire the guy who decided to push the update nonetheless thinking the plebeians could be milked without consideration ? But let's be honest, I don't think they even pay someone to play a crash test game as far as 10 years ingame.
Have the developpers tried playing with the new origin, wilderness ? Amazing concept. Worse experience of my entire time playing stellaris. That moment where your homewolrd get uncolonized because you used too much biomass at once, after struggling with buggy jobs allocation and poor UI choices, for 70 in game years, is not an experience you forget.
Have the developpers tried... no joking they clearly haven't. And if they did, they deserve at least a terrible rating for this dlc for having the audacity to sell people a dlc after releasing an update that literally break that game we, customers, paid hundred of bucks for.
Shame."

I am a relatively consistent Paradox defender and fan, to the extent that I even defended the DLC policy of CK2 back in the day.
Despite that, even *I* can see the state BioGenesis released in is unacceptable. I do not recommend that you buy it because it is quite literally unplayable at the moment. The devs are have released 5 hotfixes in the last 5 days each with a bugfix list that is at least 20 points long. I'm glad they're taking action, but the idea that the product would be released in such a state is insane.
Despite the 100s of bugs fixed, the game is still so broken that I don't want to bother launching it, so I may as well have just lit $25 on fire. The dev statement on the matter is that they apologize but it was a judgement call they'd seemingly make again, showing a stunning lack of care for their player base that has consistently bent over backwards and gone to bat for them.
The people saying the content of the DLC is good, and that it's the update that is bad are misleading you. It doesn't matter, the game is unplayable in its current state. Revert to the last 3.x version and hold off on this DLC from now. A massive shame for a lover of the *idea* of the new pop system and someone who consistently plays with all the systems BioGenesis sought to improve.

This DLC was not properly balanced nor play tested (at least for large galaxy), First game I was the planet hivemind and on the second event of the purity path it said 62 pops would die but I got some buff in return, instead what it meant was 6200 pops which was my entire civilization and the game ended. Second game I went genetic predators as a dictatorial DE, several problems:
1 The cap for the last stage took intentional creating and dismantling ships to achieve with destroying both tyainki and the amoeba system
2 the behemoth connection debuff is brutal and although I get that it is their to encourage players to kill the drake and finish the growing pains event faster It just feels like I should have gone down the other paths instead with its -120% to pop growth, output making it near unplayable
3 the growth rate modifier in the growing pains being capped at 555% feels incredibly slow, IMO the rate should increase continuously that way you can get through the terrible debuff(2) faster and get to bet the game as it is already balanced with the fact that you need to invade and destroy other empires to increase the groth rate.
4 THE MOST CRITICAL ISSUE is that the combat system seems to be having serious issues, when targeting neutral fauna my ships would sometimes spin in circles and display the fauna as friendlies until you ordered your ships to move and reengage sometimes multiple times. Not too inconvenient I thought until I had all three of my max level behemoths go up against the big bad drake and my IV started to spin in circles, one III seemed to engage fine and got him to 20% armor before needing to retreat and the other III merged with the ether drake and I'm not too sure what it was doing. So the battle was stale mate with IV staring blankly and the III and drake merged with all damage being done roughly equal to healing I tried to move IV o reengage however when I had him move suddenly the ether drake locked onto him without IV being able to get a lock on him and the UI (I hadn't realized till now) still displaying out of combat options for IV like stance and eat planet so I couldn't retreat him so he died and my game was over after 150 years and being in a death spiral for the last 30 because of the debuff (that also means I couldn't use the abilities because of how badly it killed my economy).
Other than that some smaller issues were:
as fanatic purifier gene predator you can't eat hivemind empire, you only exterminate them
when trying to depopulate planet it will make you pay the influence cost multiple times to move all the pops off the planet
can't depopulate a planet with pre-sapient of your own species if you have the trait that provides them
personally the unemployment should be replaced with available citizens icon because their will always be some unemployment on every planet but it is important to know which ones at a glance can have pops put to work
behemoths still raged out after mind meld, only cooled down after IV existed (not what the event says it will do)
I know Paradox can make this into a good DLC and I am sure it will be but at the moment there are some severe bugs that need to die and a lot of balancing tweaks that need to be sorted in order for the ascencion path to be anywhere as viable or fun as the others which it should be because It has all the models themes and ideas for it but terrible execution.
(These games were played after the day one patch)

when trying to depopulate planet it will make you pay the influence cost multiple times to move all the pops off the planet
can't depopulate a planet with pre-sapient of your own species if you have the trait that provides them
personally the unemployment should be replaced with available citizens icon because their will always be some unemployment on every planet but it is important to know which ones at a glance can have pops put to work
behemoths still raged out after mind meld, only cooled down after IV existed (not what the event says it will do)
I know Paradox can make this into a good DLC and I am sure it will be but at the moment there are some severe bugs that need to die and a lot of balancing tweaks that need to be sorted in order for the ascencion path to be anywhere as viable or fun as the others which it should be because It has all the models themes and ideas for it but terrible execution.
