Sid Meier's Civilization VIISid Meier's Civilization VII
I have many fond memories of Civilization. Ever since a friend of mine convinced me to get into Civ IV with him I've been hooked on every subsequent entry until this one. I can see the potential, I really can, but it's just not fun anymore. Instead of "Yes, mom, one more turn!" it became "Come on man, you paid for this, one more turn..." - Ages: The idea is solid, the execution not so much. You essentially play 30% of each era gimped because you are in "crisis". This crisis feels disconnected from whatever occured in the game before and brings with it nothing but debuffs, unlike dark age cards in Civ 6 which at least gave you a positive effect in return for a negative one - Navigable rivers are a nice addition, wanted to say something purely positive - Culture switching: Honestly, this can work, but not if you're just allowed to pick any culture you want just because you reached a certain milestone. Roman don't become Mughals not matter how many cities I've build, thank you very much. And it's one thing if that would be player exclusive, but it's jarring to go up against confucius leading Spain. I would very much like A) an Earth map with TSL B) an option to make cultures only progress into their next logical 1 or 2 options when played by AI - Combat: This one is actually almost better than before. It's a bit sad my defending archer can kill 20 units without ever even getting so much as a slight experience boost but I love the commander system. Just: if I want to reinforce my commander, let me do it without having to zoom in and click on the exact correct spot instead of selecting my comander by accident. I mean, no QA worth his salt should have let that PASS - UI and Jank: The UI is terrible and makes me want to murder some devs. The controls aren't much better (read above: selecting commander while reinforcing) - Graphics: I'm just not that impressed. Color coding aside, I feel there are older 4X games much prettier to look at, such as Humankind. The map generation is a joke, even after the last update I see block basically. All in all: I really hope they fix it, I really hope it doesn't take 200 Eur in DLC and expansions to get there and for now I recommend HUMANKIND with the Tripple alliance and the TSL earth mods

If you loved Civ 6 you'll like Civ 7. If you liked Civ 6 wait for a Steam sale.

Ah yes Civilization, one of my favorite franchises out there. What it does well is create accesible games with some depth and a fun journey through time, from the stone age to modern times. Every game in the series does things differently and people have their favorite game. I for one, found Civ V to be my favorite and I never enjoyed Civ 6 quite as much. I've played 6 for hundreds of hours but eventually gave up on it and went back to Civ 5. There was just too much clutter and micromanagement, too many choices that pushed the player toward perfectionism, to just sticking to a rigid playstyle. Once a mistake was made you were locked in and so I stopped experimenting because it wasn't rewarding. And that was fine for me, As a relatively old school player that started on Civ 3, I've seen the games release and evolve every single time. The base game is never the best, it used to take 2 or more DLC's to get every Civ game to its masterpiece status. People tend to forget that. Same thing here, we all want games to be the best version of themselves. Thing is though, we live in a time when some people feel entitled to what they want and become a toxic vocal mess that make games look like they're bad when they're not. Review bombing, pushing agenda's, falsifying information, its happening everywhere and also here. Let's be mindful about that. I enjoy Civ VII a lot, even with its flaws. Most changes are great, civs are more distinct, flow has been much improved and I feel they really do try to make something worth playing. Whats not so great are bugs, problems connecting to multiplayer games and a distinct lack of information in the UI. Its hard to predict results of policies and buildings because the info isn't shown. Als the monetization in form of micro DLCs is not something I support. But still, all in all Civ 7 is a enjoyable product that is addictive and makes it much easier to experiment with your playstyle through ages and changing worlds. Civ VII is a good game that in time might just become a great game. I just hope that the devs will stay calm, gather data and make the best game they want to make for everyone. Instead of changing the game into something based on what a vocal minority want it to be for themselves.
