I tried. God, I tried.
I gave her the best shoes, the best meals, trained her under the clearest skies, and yet… she lost.
She stumbled on the final corner, and I stumbled as a trainer, no, as a human being.
How do I look her in the eyes after this? Those bright, hopeful eyes that once sparkled with dreams of victory… now clouded with tears.
“I’ll win next time, Trainer!” she said, forcing a smile through her trembling lips — but I knew it was for my sake.
I wasn’t just training a racer. I was nurturing a dream. And I crushed it with my incompetence.
I picked the wrong races. I misjudged her stats. I overtrained when she needed rest.
I failed to notice she was tired.
I failed to see she needed a break.
I failed… her.
The crowds cheered for another, but I heard nothing. Just the sound of her hooves slowing, her breath short, her heart breaking.
And mine with it.
If you're reading this… cherish your horsegirl. Don’t make the same mistakes I did.
Because sometimes, it's not the race you lose —
It’s her trust.

A bad Trainer blames the horse.
A bad Trainer blames the gacha.
A true Trainer knows they are at fault when their horse loses the race.
A true Trainer hugs the screen and whispers, “You tried your best.”
A true Trainer spends 3 hours perfecting a schedule, only to watch her girl trip at the starting line.
10/10 would raise horse idols again. (This is honestly a great game.)

This game devoured my soul and gave me a reason to keep breathing through the misery.
Before Umamusume: Pretty Derby, I was bitchless, broke, starved for serotonin, and violently unbased.
Then I saw her — Oguri Cap — shining like a silvery carb-fueled deity on my screen.
She ran a 3,000m race after digesting 14 metric tons of rice, and didn’t even sweat.
Shakespeare? Illiterate.
Tolkien? Mid.
Oguri Cap? Built different.
Her thighs could crush tanks.
Her eyes pierce into my soul.
She doesn't just run — she ascends across the track like a war crime with legs.
This wasn’t a game. This was a religious experience. A transmission from God himself: “You will never be enough. But she will.”

This game changed my life. Before seeing Umamusume: Pretty Derby in the steam shop, I was torn, bitchless, destitute, perhaps even devastated. Then my eyes and ears were blessed with a chorus of 15 horse girls performing on stage. Tears streamed from my eyes; I knew my life would never be the same. Thrilling gameplay, inspiring soundtracks, enticing story, this game truly has it all. It is as Haddam Hussain once said to his peers: "This shit is peak". Words can describe how I feel about this game. This game even goes as far as to break the fourth wall, affecting my real life. My mother walked in on my first derby cup race, and needless to say, tears began to stream out of her eyes as well. "Oh my son, how I'm so proud of you. You are morbidly a beast!". Now after a lifetime (0.3 hours) of gameplay, I am truly transformed. Yes I am still torn, bitchless, and destitute, but I am happy, knowing that I will exist to see Umamusume: Pretty Derby live in the steam store

I've played many gacha games for varying lengths of time, and at first I was really in love with this one. The characters are cute and cool, the writing is pretty good overall (especially if you like sports animes), and the core roguelike loop feels more like an actual game than a rote daily task (at least for as much as I've played so far.)
However, I just experienced the first event change-over, and it feels *horrible*.
For anyone not familiar with gacha game SOP:
The bread and butter of most gacha games is limited-time events, each focused on a specific SSR character. Correspondingly that character will be the focus of the event gachapon pull, with a higher chance that any SSR pull will be the event character. Since pulls are still random though, typically there will be a guaranteed way to get the event character, which is . This is all true in U:PD, and here, X is 200. So after 200 pulls in any event, you are guaranteed that event's SSR character. It's an important fail-safe to prevent too much player dissatisfaction from long unlucky streaks.
One important thing that differs from gacha game to gacha game is the answer to "What happens to unspent event gacha points when the event ends?" In other words, if you did 150 gacha pulls during an event, what happens to those 150 event points? The only transaction established is 200 EP = free SSR event character. Answers to that question range from "You lose those points and gain nothing" to "Those event points become generic pull points, where you exchange 200 generic points for a random SSR character".
Umamusume: Pretty Derby falls on the "you lose the points and gain nothing" side of things. You technically don't gain *nothing*--what you actually get is a generic currency, "clovers", where 200 clovers = 1 generic gacha pull. So, rather than 200 points guaranteeing an SSR character, instead you get 200 points gives you one free random pull. I don't know the exact pull rates in this game, but from my experience so far I'd guess it's a ~2% chance for an SSR. In other words, for the expected value of 1 SSR you'd need 50 pulls, which means 50*200= 10,000 clovers. It's a complete leg-sweep (which is bad for horses!) of the excitement and anticipation about getting a new character. Remember that these event points are meant to work as a failsafe to ensure players don't feel like all their hopes and effort went unrewarded if they get hit by a string of bad luck. Losing that feels very bad.
So, all that said, it's important to keep in mind for this game that you should never do an event pull unless you have stored up enough currency to do *200* pulls. It's 1500 carats per 10-pull, so 20*1500= 30,000 carats. Spend any less than that at a time and you might end up losing it all for nothing. It's a shame that such an otherwise good gacha game decided to go with a predatory and punishing event point system.

HAVE YOU EVER HORSE RACED WITH YOUR LIFE ON THE LINE?!
For anyone who is resistant to the aesthetic of the game, I promise the gameplay is worth it.
