I wish steam allowed for a neutral recomendation. Because i think for some people i could recommend this game as it is, but for many others i would not. Yes i know it is EA, but that isnt a barrier to criticism, if anything, it should encourage it.
Lets start whith the things i was truly impressed whith enshrouded, which is sadly not many.
-The building system is great. Its where this game shines the most. It gives a ton of liberty and the only thing i would change is add a bit of structural integrity system to it. But this feature alone would make me recommend this game to everyone that enjoys building in these survival games.
-The setting is interesting, and enshrouded has a good habit of looking at what the others do right and add it into the game.
-The progression is okey, and i guess thats what keeps most people playing (besides the building system), but i dont think there is anything truly new or interesting about it. It gets the job done for sure, but i was never that excited about what came next and that eventualy made me stop playing.
Some of the negatives:
-The combat is bad. Wand are the best option, specialy once you find you can jump spam and attack. Combat revolves arround spaming attacks while staying out of range, whith the ocasional dodge. It is easy and boring. Some meele enemies start doing their long attack animation which just allows you to hit them for free. They feel more like pinatas then enemies. I dont like the fact spells are ammo, i do not like the skill tree, i do not like how the meele combat feels. I could go on but it would turn into a rant.
- The exploration and loot. I see a lot of people prasing this game exploration, but what realy is the core loop of this game? It is sadly boring and repetetive. If you enjoy ubisoft levels of clearing marks on the map, i guess you could enjoy it, but not only the locations feel visually similar, the game simply reveals everything to you as you go. You are never truly exploring, just going from waypoint to waypoint most of the time. I enjoyed the story telling through the notes you find arround the map, but thats about it.
And the loot. This is unforgivable in this type of game. The loot is horrific. You might go into this realy cool crypt, open the treasure chest, and find the same item you found in a random chest in a tent. The loot is unispiring and bland. I am also not a fan of the game resetting the world everytime you log off. It looses the sense of progressiona and your impact on the world. The only thing that stays saved is whatever you do in your house, which again, is the best part of the game in my opinion.
-I know its EA but a couple of sugestions. Fix brightness problem ASAP, its either too bright or too dark in places where it doesnt feel like it should. Some jumping animations are also missing. Ocasional bugs, but the perfomance is decent and for EA, its not too janky.
Overall the game as it is, is an average experience. I think they are trying to be many things at the same time and not choosing what they are going for. Is this a survival game? An RPG? Is exporation the main focus? They take a lot of good inspiration from other games, but when it is all added together if feels painfully average. I went in expecting to be blown away and have some realy fun first experience in the game like i had in other EA tittles such as valheim, palworld, and others, but that moment never came and i quickly lost interest too keep playing. I will certainly revisit this game as the roadmap looks promissing, but at this current moment i cant justify, to most people, getting into the game.
