Happy 20th anniversary to this game. my dad loves this game, i liked black mesa, so i decided it was time i finished this game. it was a lot of fun. (thank god for the ending of half life alyx, i would have had a mental breakdown if i didnt know of the ending of this and HL:Alyx)
Personally don't like this. it's not a bad game, it just doesn't do... things.
it's just 1984 but aliens, somehow gordon is jesus despite not actually helping at all (killing the nihilanth didn't close the portal, it made more portals appear so if anything gordon is the reason humanity is enslaved), and the combat is flat.
the story doesn't make any sense, like who the hell are these characters? Barney i get, although he ages in reverse apparently, but Kleiner and Eli were not in the first game. there were scientists who looked like kleiner, but there were dozens of them. the one black character model in half life 1 has no similarities to eli other than being black, so do with that information as you will.
Alyx lived in black mesa, despite black mesa being a super secret military testing base, yeah i'm sure area 51 just has babies running around. the psychics, despite being hailed as "the best ever made" are buggy and feel more like a tech demo.
HL2 is praised, but the people praising it played it a long time ago. don't get it now. if it's in a bundle, sure. but going out of your way to avoid HL1 and it's expansions, and getting HL2 is like avoiding the shooting range targets and purposely aiming for your foot. Kinda like the combat of HL2.
I think this game is way overrated, and just not good. Source engine sucks ass in these types of games, and the game just doesn't feel good. It's ok, but super underwhelming.
